General Release
Notes
About the plug-in package
Since version 3.7, this plug-in package has included two
plug-ins, (1) plug_digicam,
which uses PolyImagePro along
with Canon, Nikon and Foveon libraries (and its numerous internally supported
formats), and (2) plug_digiraw,
which uses Dave
Coffin's dcraw.c.
This second plug-in can support many additional manufacturers and models,
including the Canon PowerShot G9, for which Canon has never released libraries. Note that some formats are supported by only one of the libraries.
Canon notes
Canon Raw files with a .TIF extension may be loaded using
the plug-in. Change .TIF loading to "Cerious Plug-in" using Options
| Preferences | File Types.
Because of a bug in the Canon libraries, ThumbsPlus 7.0 SP2 or later
is required to view EXIF information from Canon 30D images. Some
earlier builds also caused problems loading Canon 20D and 30D images. You can
download 7.0 SP2 or version 8 from www.cerious.com.

Installation Notes
Supported version of ThumbsPlus
This plug-in requires ThumbsPlus Pro version 7 or later! It will
not work with earlier versions. For information on upgrading to ThumbsPlus
version 7 or 8, please visit our
upgrade page. You may install the plug-in on the Standard version of ThumbsPlus, but the images will be watermarked when loading. You'll need the Pro version to get the full benefit.
Supported operating systems
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP
- Windows Server 2003
- Windows Vista
- Windows Server 2008
- Windows
7
- All 64-bit versions of the above
As always, the latest service packs are recommended. We only test on the latest service pack of each operating system.
Installation procedure
- The installer will detect which ThumbsPlus versions (7 and 8) that are properly installed, and allow you to install on whichever it detects. If ThumbsPlus is not properly installed (usually due to moving to a different folder or disk), you'll need to reinstall ThumbsPlus.
Configuring file extensions
The installer will add the supported raw file extensions to the Thumbs.typ or Thumbs8.typ file
in the ThumbsPlus program folder or the approriate writeable folder (Vista/Windows 7).
For any given file extension, you can select which plug-in
to use; in Options | Preferences | File Types, select or add
the extension, then select Cerious Plug-in as the Load file using method
and plug_digicam or plug_digiraw from the drop-down as desired.
If you select plug_digicam, it will automatically try plug_digiraw if
plug_digicam fails. This is especially useful if you wish to load most CR2
files with the Canon libraries,
but use
DCraw
for
unsupported
types such as the G9. Here is an example of the file type options for Canon .CRW files:
| Extension |

|
Each plug-in also has separate loading options available;
these will be expanded in the future. The plug-ins may also be combined at
some point -- but for selection by file type, using the built-in ThumbsPlus
file configuration is the best way for now. In the future, selection by specific
camera model may be available.
If you do not see your raw images after installing the
plug-in, be sure that their file extension is defined and checked in Options
| Preferences | File Types, and that Load Using is
set to Cerious Plug-in, and that you have not selected
a file mask that excludes the files you want to see (Options | Which Files | By Mask).
Top
Known
Issues
- The progress during file loading using plug_digiraw only
includes the transfer of image data from the dcraw program,
which runs as a separate process and does not provide feedback during the
actual image decoding.
- Files loaded with plug_digiraw are always rotated based
on EXIF or other internal orientation information. This is because dcraw does
not currently provide an option to disable this feature.
- EXIF/XMP information is not always available for images loaded using plug_digiraw.
This has been improved upon for many cameras in Version 8 of ThumbsPlus.
- Files may be rotated twice if the Rotate based on orientation option is selected both in the plug-in and in the ThumbsPlus. Generally, you should turn off the orientation option in the plug-in and leave it on in ThumbsPlus.

Supported
Formats (partial list)
Even if your camera is not on this list, please give
it a try! Because of the
way camera manufacturers
store
the data,
and
because of camera rebranding, many formats not listed
here will still work.
This list is from the DCRAW web page as of 7 May 2009,
so applies to plug_digiraw.
There are also formats supported only by plug_digicam and
PolyImagePro. I am working on updating this list to
make it more complete.
