This dialog tab allows you to set the options for thumbnail creation and display in ThumbsPlus.

Thumbnail dimensions. (The following options affect the thumbnail storage size in the ThumbsPlus database.)

Width. Enter the desired width for image thumbnails stored in the ThumbsPlus database.

Height. Enter the desired height for image thumbnails stored in the ThumbsPlus database.

Color Depth. Pick the desired color depth for image thumbnails stored in the ThumbsPlus database. ThumbsPlus supports the following thumbnail color depths:

Grayscale (32 level)

Black and white thumbnails with 32 different grayscale levels.

236 color palette

236 color thumbnails based on the ThumbsPlus color palette.

Highcolor (15-bit)

32768 color (Blue,Green,Red) thumbnails with 5 bits per color sample. The 16th bit is unused.

Truecolor (24-bit)

16 million color (Blue, Green, Red) thumbnails with 8 bits per color sample.

Compression. Pick the desired compression method for image thumbnails stored in the ThumbsPlus database. ThumbsPlus supports the following thumbnail coompression methods:

None

Check this option to store uncompressed thumbnails in the database (not recommended).

LZH (lossless)

Check this option to compress the thumbnail data, using LZH compression, prior to being stored in the database. This option is faster than JPEG compression with NO loss of image quality.

JPEG (lossy)

Check this option to use JPEG compression when storing thumbnails in the database. A Quality value must be entered in the range of 25-90. This value affects the amount of compression performed. JPEG compression with a low quality value can yield higher compression results than LZH, yet the JPEG compressed thumbnail will exhibit a noticeable reduction of image quality with lower quality (higher compression) values.

When making thumbnails. (The following options affect the creation of thumbnails stored in the ThumbsPlus database.)

Autocrop edges. Automatically crop (remove all continuous border of the same color) images when creating thumbnails. This cropping does NOT alter the original image file, only the resulting thumbnail.

Check for Digimarc® watermark. Detect and mark images containing embedded Digimarc® watermarks when creating thumbnails. Thumbnails for detected images will display a red copyright symbol in the upper right corner of the thumbnail.

Highest quality thumbnails. When this option is checked, ThumbsPlus resamples each image (using interpolation) down to the desired thumbnail dimensions prior to making the Thumbnail.

Sharpen after reduction. Check this option to sharpen resampled thumbnails. This has the effect of running a Sharpen Less filter applied to intensity only.

Enhance contrast. Check this option to enhance the contrast of resampled thumbnails. This has the effect of performing a Histogram - Stretch function.

Create persistent .tp_jptn files for thumbnails made from clipboard. Check this option to have ThumbsPlus store a backup copy of a thumbnail (when made using Thumbnail | Make from Clipboard) as a JPEG file in the same folder as the selected file.

Note: The file name for this persistent thumbnail file will be the file name of the selected file with a .tp_jptn file extension. For subsequent thumbnailing, the persistent thumbnail file will ONLY be used if the selected file cannot be read for image data (i.e. damaged file or unrecognized format).

Max file size for MD5 computation. You can limit the file size for which MD5 digests are computed using this option.

Alpha channel background color. ThumbsPlus will render the thumbnails of images with transparency on this color. Using white is recommended and changing the color will affect similarity matching.

Automatically copy image comments to database annotations

Never. Check this option to ignore image comments when making thumbnails (existing thumbnails' annotations will remain untouched).

For new thumbnails only. Check this option to make database annotations from image comments for new thumbnails only (existing thumbnails' annotations will remain untouched).

Always. Check this option to take file comments (if present) and store them in the database as annotations every time you make thumbnails. This will replace any existing database annotations.

When displaying thumbnails

Show orphaned thumbnails. Show orphaned thumbnails in the thumbnail view. This option tends to slow down the thumbnail view display as ThumbsPlus scans the database for any entries which do not have corresponding files on disk.

Show decorations. Display thumbnail decorations on the corners of thumbnails.

Automatically remove orphans. Remove any orphaned thumbnails each time a new folder (see folder tree) is displayed. This removes orphaned thumbnails from the currently displayed folder ONLY. You may also remove orphans manually using the Thumbnail | Remove | Orphans option in the main menu.

Show font names. When this is selected, ThumbsPlus will scan TrueType font files and load the font names. It will display these instead of the file names. Additionally, the font names will be green if the font is installed.

Make thumbnails automatically. Scan for thumbnails each time a new folder is displayed (see folder tree again).

Contribution of thumbnail color in similarity testing. Use this field to tell ThumbsPlus how much (in percent) you want color (versus shape) to contribute to image similarity matching functions (Sort by Similarity, Find Similar Images).
